There are morning and afternoon activities called eftis in grades 1-2, to which pupils are entitled by law. Eftis is maintained both by municipalities and privately, for example by parishes or Hem och Skola associations *(cooperation between schools and parents). A fee is charged for these activities. The purpose of the Eftis activities is to avoid that the youngest children have to stay alone at home after school, while their parents are at work. For children in grades 1-2 the school day mostly ends around 12-13 hours whereas eftis is normally open till around 17 hours. In some locations also morning activities are arranged before school hours according to the same principle.
